Schutzhund/IPO can be a very fun and rewarding adventure for both you and your dog. Many are drawn to the sport because either they like the idea of doing “protection” work with their dogs or because they have read about the history of the German Shepherd Dog or Schutzhund so get the idea that they would like to try this with their dog.
If you have never trained in a Schutzhund club before, it’s important to understand the realities of training and titling in IPO (formally also known as schutzhund). The future of Schutzhund/IPO lies in getting new enthusiasts into the sport. However, there is variety in how each Schutzhund/IPO club operates. Anyone interested in joining a club should make a reasonable investment of time to get to know the training director and its members, and make sure there’s a fit.
The training director will determine if your dog is a suitable candidate for Schutzhund / IPO training. The dog must have a sound temperament. Dangerous dogs will not be permitted.
